We started out on the drive actually headed to Legoland in San Diego. But something was nagging at me. I spoke in code to my wife… writing out letters carefully one by one on her leg as we drove. We needed to be in total agreement if we were going to make such a big detour and you don’t have those conversations out loud in front of the kids. We agreed with an eye look and a nod of excitement. So then we sprung it on the kids. Plan change: kids, this car was headed to Disneyland instead. They freaked.
The 40 before 40 challenge is all about doing new things I had never done before… While I’ve been to Disneyland, it’s been several years, not since our youngest was very little. She didn’t remember any of it and she deserved that Disney moment too. So we went. And we did up Disney like a bunch of kids.
We arrived early, they got their ears, and we hit the rides… nearly ALL the rides… nearly all day. Tea Cups, Autopia, Tiki Room, Jungle Cruise, Indiana Jones, Thunder Mountain, the Matterhorn. Our little gal didn’t go on every ride but she went on most of them including the classics like Pinnochio and Sleeping Beauty and the Tarzan Tree House. We rode and rode. Along the way, I joined the kids in doing many things at Disney I had never done before, a true 40 before 40, like riding the huge sailing ship around the water.
And the girls got their princess moments. While the 10 year old is right on the cusp of tweenville, feeling like she’s too old to snap pics with a princess, the younger one was enamored. She deserved that excitement and that feeling. We deserved that parenting moment too. We got it.
The night ended with a show on the water, the famous fireworks, and the light parade. But we weren’t done. In true 40 before 40 fashion, trying to do totally new things, we snuck in right at the end of the parade, right behind Mickey, and joined the parade down Main Street. Us. The kids even did a little dance as we paraded through the crowd. We closed out the place and left at midnight.
It sounds cliche to say Disney provided us with a magical moment. And it is a pricey expedition for sure. But for a day, just one day, we were all little kids again. And it was all good.
