Dadmissions: What The Kids Don’t Know.. Won’t Hurt Them

My wife and I went to a meeting the other night, one of those poorly scheduled Sunday night meetings which should have been on a weekday or never at all because it really wasn’t all that important meetings.  So we went to that meeting.  It lasted an hour.  But the one most important thing to come out of that meeting, came in the very last thing the meeting leader said.  He said, “OK we’re done… and since you already have someone watching the kids… go out on a date night and tell the kids the meeting ran long… they’ll never know”.  And so we did.  On a rare Sunday night, I took my wife out for ice cream like we were teenagers again.  She had two scoops of the butter pecan.  I had a hot fudge sundae with whipped cream and nuts.  We sat in peace.  We enjoyed our ice cream.  We talked like a couple.  And we didn’t share with the kids.  We didn’t even think about the kids.  And we most certainly didn’t bring home ice cream for the kids because THAT would have blown our cover.  We sat for a few more minutes in a sort-of couple’s bliss and then picked up some groceries on the way home.  And when the kids ran to the door and asked us what took so long… we told them the meeting ran long.  What the kids don’t know… Won’t hurt them…
